More to Sea Than Meets the Eye…
Travelling down the Whale Route also entails learning about the culture and heritage of the Manicouagan region. Can you say the following place names three times quickly: Sainte-Anne-de-Portneuf, Forestville, Colombier, Betsiamites, Ragueneau, Papinachois? Once you mastered that little tongue twister, try this one: Manicouagan Peninsula, Chute-aux-Outardes, Pointe-aux-Outardes, Baie-Comeau, Franquelin, Godbout, Pointe-des-Monts. Whew…

While it may take some practice before these poetic sounding names roll smoothly off the tongue, they capture the beauty of Manicouagan and its history. Explore the region to learn more about the heritage of Manicouagan's hardy coastal people through a celebration of nature, culture, art and handicrafts.

Art and Handicrafts

As you travel from village to village along the Whale Route, you will pass charming boutiques, artisan's workshops and art galleries along the roadway, making you feel you are following an itinerary of the region's art scene. Painting, sculpture, pottery, weaving, knitting, stained glass, photography and jewellery are but some of the media used by local artists. The region boasts a number of skilled Aboriginal handicraft artisans, and many artists create masterpieces in original media, such as sand and mineral montages in bottles.
