Manicouagan-Uapishka World Biosphere Reserve
© M. Loiselle
In September 2007, the entire region of Manicouagan was designated a world biosphere reserve by UNESCO. After five years, the committee working on this project was finally rewarded for its efforts.

This committee brought together a large network of partners including representatives of the forestry, mining and energy sectors; environmentalists; First Nations people; tourism representatives; community organizations; the educational sector; municipalities; local businesses and individual citizens. The goal of this concerted effort was for the Manicouagan region to become a model of sustainable development. In addition, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO complimented the committee on presenting an initiative that has the potential to embody the new values of the world biosphere reserve network, that is, to provide an opportunity for local input in the context of applying sustainable development principles.

Manicouagan's hinterland

From Baie-Comeau, the Trans-Québec-Labrador Highway (Route 389) gives you access to an immense playground and a wide variety of activities: hunting, fishing, camping, dams, hiking, etc.

The impressive Manicouagan forest extends through the hinterland all the way to the Nouveau-Québec region over territory dotted with mountains, lakes and rivers. Thirty-five years ago, Hydro-Québec began tapping the region's energy-making potential, building nine major hydroelectric facilities in the process, including the famous Manic-5 dam, which is considered an engineering triumph. The reservoir north of the dam forms a perfect circle around René-Levasseur Island . The reservoir itself is located in one of the largest impact craters on Earth.

Formed 214 million years ago, this gigantic crater is visible from space. Rock climbing enthusiasts will want to test their mettle by scaling some of the 30 peaks in the Groulx Mountains that stand over 1000 metres (3300 feet) above sea level. This is also an opportunity to admire spectacular views surrounded by territory of unsuspected ecological diversity.
