The Whale Route

Manicouagan

Land on northern coastal territory and uncover the secrets of a nature whose wild beauty, still intact in several locations, gives its landscapes an appearance of vastness. Witness fabulous sites which have a radiant and calm appearance, but sometimes show their fiery nature. Travel through bays and villages, explore trails and shores, take pleasure in sailing the waves and catch your breath where the omnipresence of the water is reflected in the customs. As part of Le Québec maritime, Manicouagan greets you with open arms. Well located in an environment that is always cool, Manicouagan offers picturesque panoramas where the greenness of the vegetation, the sky’s canopy, and its blue waves match with the winter brilliance of its white and vast areas.

On the Whale Path
From Tadoussac to Baie-Trinité, appreciate the numerous products and services offered along the Whale Route. Quite at home along Manicouagan’s 300 km of shore, the St. Lawrence River carves out the coast, shapes coves and bays, contours islands and covers long beaches with sand. It is no surprise that it is home to the largest mammals that the sea
has seen! Follow this exotic route and discover and admire these more than impressive creatures.

The North Shore and the Trans Quebec-Labrador Highway
Now it is easy to travel to the North Shore, thanks to the 1300-km (780-mile) Trans Quebec-Labrador Highway. Stretching along the St. Lawrence River to the Labrador Sea, this highway winds past monuments to human technological achievement and superb forest landscapes.

The mighty Manicouagan River, whose power was harnessed by Hydro-Québec in the 1960s, flows from the immense Manicouagan Crater to the St. Lawrence River near Baie-Comeau. Several hydro-electric dams were built on the Manicouagan River, including the Manic 5, an enormous structure testifying to Quebec's engineering expertise. Visit the largest multi-arch dam in the world—its sheer size will leave you speechless! Farther north, the peaks of the Groulx Mountains stand proudly on the northern horizon.

The Trans Quebec-Labrador is the northernmost highway in Eastern North America. Highway 389 links Baie-Comeau, the Manic 5, Fermont, Labrador City, Churchill Falls and Happy Valley-Goose Bay, where the NATO military base is located. A ferry travels regularly between Goose Bay and Newfoundland.

In the summer
Take advantage of the warmer months to explore the hidden treasures of the North. Over 150 km (90 miles) of beaches are perfect for leisurely walks with your family or that special someone. Cruises, biking, swimming, camping, hiking, scuba diving and guided sea kayak expeditions are all activities you can practice along the Whale Route. Add a visit to Tadoussac to your itinerary, the site of one of the most beautiful bays in the world, located in the heart of the Saguenay & St. Lawrence Marine Park.

In the Winter
Wrapped in a stunning cloak of satiny white gold, the entire region becomes an outdoor winter playground par excellence. You can go downhill or cross-country skiing, dogsledding, snowshoeing, ice fishing or camping in an igloo or tent. The North Shore has over 2000 km (1200 miles) of snowmobiling trails winding through the region's snowy expanses.
